Japan was founded in London in 1974. Originally influenced by the glam rock of David Bowie and The New York Dolls, singer-songwriter David Sylvian, bassist Mick Karn, keyboardist Richard Barbieri, drummer Steve Jansen and guitarist Rob Dean turned to synth pop and explored the genre with some very experimental songs. In March 1978, they made their Japanese debut with the album "Adolescent Sex", followed by "Obscure Alternatives" in October of the same year. Quiet Life" followed in 1979. The best Japanese songs are collected on the Best Of compilation "Assemblage".

That the groundbreaking Quiet Life album was released between 1979 and 1980 is indicative of a band that was about to step out of the shadow of late 70s glam rock and post punk and deliver a hitherto genre-defying record that would later define the 80s. Quiet Life was the third, final and most successful release on the Hansa Records label. This album, which has become one of Britain's greatest classics, heralded the alternative sound and the new wave of the new decade. The album is now out in an excellent reissue with a brand new semi-fast remaster of the original Abbey Road album. The deluxe version also features alternate mixes, B-sides, singles, rarities and live material - including the lost March 1980 'Live at The Budokan' concert, previously only available as the four-track 'Live in Japan' EP. The release includes restored original album artwork, new liner notes with contributions from band members and the original producer, as well as rare, previously unseen photographs and memorabilia.
