Die lange Karriere des wahren Man In Black hat erstaunliche Resultate produziert. Hätten Sie z. B. gedacht, dass Johnny Cash bisher ebenso viele US-Pop-Chart-Singles (48) hatte wie die Stones und die Beach Boys? Oder dass er gleich zwei seiner elf Grammies als Autor von Linernotes (für sein "At Folsom Prison"-Album und Dylans "Nashville Skyline") gewann. Oder diese Bilanz: 38 (!) Jahre in Folge war der Mann aus Arkansas mit mindestens zwei Singles in den Country-Charts vertreten. Doch Johnny Cash hat nicht nur historische Verdienste, die ihresgleichen suchen - er fügt dieser Historie immer noch wertvolle Kapitel hinzu. Was auch die Grammies symbolisieren, welche die jetzt 70-jährige Ikone seit dem Comeback 1994 in Reihe bekam. Für American Recordings als "Best Folk Album"; für Unchained als "Best Country Album" (legendär damals die "Billboard"-Anzeige, in der sich Cash mit ausgestrecktem Mittelfinger für die "Unterstützung" des "Nashville music establishment" bedankte...) sowie 2000 für sein letztes Album Solitary Man – in der Sparte "Best Country Male Vocal Performance". Im Jahr zuvor hatte er zudem den begehrten "Lifetime Achievement"-Grammy bekommen. Anfang November folgt das nächste Kapitel.

Mit "American IV: The Man Comes Around" setzt Johnny Cash die in jeder Hinsicht erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit mit dem Produzenten Rick Rubin fort. Als Musiker waren u.a. Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante, Beck-Gitarrist Smokey Hormel, Keyboard-Legende Billy Preston, Drummer Joey Waronker (R.E.M.), Benmont Tench und Mike Campbell aus dem Tom Petty-Camp sowie die Bluegrass/Country-Picker Randy Scruggs und Marty Stuart dabei. Dazu stießen illustre Vocal-Gäste: Nick Cave singt gemeinsam mit Cash auf Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," Fiona Apple gibt sich die Ehre bei Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," und Songautor Don Henley ließ sich die Gelegenheit nicht entgehen, seinen Eagles-Klassiker "Desperado" noch einmal (mit) zu interpretieren. Desweiteren lieferten Trent Reznor ("Hurt"), Martin Gore von Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), Sting ("I Hung My Head") sowie das Duo Lennon & McCartney ("In My Life") attraktive Vorlagen für Cash. Der schrieb aber auch vier Songs selbst, darunter eine Reprise seines klassischen "Give My Love to Rose" sowie den Gospel-Titelsong, über den sein alter (und neuer) Sideman Marty Stuart ungefähr diesen schönen Satz gesagt hat: "Es ist das merkwürdigste, erstaunlichste, wundervollste, mysteriöseste christliche Ding, das nur Gott und Johnny Cash gemeinsam kreieren konnten." Und an den beiden kommt bekanntlich keiner vorbei.

This album is a great example of Johnny Cash's later work, a mixture of cover versions and originals, and shows off Cash's voice and guitar playing very well. The album has a dark, moody atmosphere and is a great listen from start to finish.

The long career of the real Man in Black has produced amazing results. Would you think, for example, that Johnny Cash has as many singles (48) in the US pop charts as the Stones and the Beach Boys? Or that he won two of his eleven Grammys as a liner notes writer (for "At Folsom Prison" and Dylan's "Nashville Skyline"). Or this record: for 38 (!) consecutive years, a man from Arkansas has been represented on the country charts by at least two singles. But Johnny Cash not only has historical credits that are unparalleled - he continues to add valuable chapters to that history. This is symbolized by the Grammys that the now 70-year-old icon has won in consecutive years since his comeback in 1994. For American Recordings as "Best Folk Album", for Unchained as "Best Country Album" (legendary at the time was the Billboard ad in which Cash thanked the "Nashville music establishment" with an outstretched middle finger for their "support"...) and in 2000 for his latest album, Solitary Man - in the "Best Male Country Vocal Performance" category. The year before, he also won the prestigious Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement. The next chapter will follow in early November. On "American IV: The Man Comes Around," Johnny Cash continues his successful collaboration with producer Rick Rubin. Musicians included Red Hot Chili Pepper John Frusciante, Becka guitarist Smokey Hormel, keyboard legend Billy Preston, drummer Joey Waronker (R.E.M.), Benmont Tench and Mike Campbell from the Tom Petty camp, as well as bluegrass and country players Randy Scruggs and Marty Stuart. They were joined by celebrity vocal guests: Nick Cave sang Hank Williams' "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" with Cash, Fiona Apple sang Paul Simon's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," and singer-songwriter Don Henley didn't miss the opportunity to re(co-)interpret the Eagles' classic "Desperado." Trent Reznor ("Hurt"), Martin Gore of Depeche Mode ("Personal Jesus"), Sting ("I Hung My Head") and the duo of Lennon & McCartney ("In My Life") also provided Cash with attractive role models. But Cash also wrote four songs himself, including a reprise of his classic "Give My Love to Rose" and the title gospel song, about which his old (and new) bandmate Marty Stuart said something like this beautiful line, "It's the weirdest, most amazing, most mysterious Christian thing that only God and Johnny Cash could have created together." And as we know, no one can get past those two.
