Animalize was a commercial success, reaching number six on the Billboard 200 chart and selling two million copies in the United States. The album spawned four hit singles, "Heaven's on Fire", "Burn Bitch Burn", "Lick It Up" and "All Hell's Breakin' Loose". The most successful single was "Heaven's on Fire", which reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100. The album Animalize was praised by music critics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it "an outstanding hard rock album" and "one of the band's best records". Robert Christgau said of it that it was "hard and heavy, pedal steel and rhythmically inventive".
