Madonna hat eine lange Geschichte von Alben, die Fans und Kritiker gleichermaßen verblüfft haben, aber als sie 1998 ihr Album RAY OF LIGHT veröffentlichte, war das Erstaunlichste, wie sehr sie sich musikalisch neu erfunden hatte. Das war nicht immer so - die ursprünglichen Sessions für ihr siebtes Album wurden von Babyface und Patrick Leonard geleitet - aber nachdem sich diese Bemühungen für Madonna als unbefriedigend erwiesen, stellte sie stattdessen William Orbit ein, dessen Produktionstechniken zu einer LP führten, die sich von allem unterscheidet, was sie jemals zuvor abgeliefert hatte. Und ja, das meinen wir im positiven Sinne.

RAY OF LIGHT war wohl das erste Album einer Mainstream-Künstlerin, die sich der Electronica-Bewegung zuwandte, und nutzte die technologischen Fortschritte im Aufnahmestudio voll aus, wobei der Sound mit Synthesizern und Samples überlagert wurde. Noch beeindruckender ist, dass Madonnas Publikum sich ihrer Entscheidung, diese entschieden andere Klangrichtung einzuschlagen, nicht widersetzte: Die Zahl der Länder, in denen das Album die Charts anführte, lag im zweistelligen Bereich, und sowohl "Frozen" als auch der Titelsong des Albums waren Top-10-Hits in den USA und im Vereinigten Königreich, wobei der erstgenannte Song sogar die britischen Single-Charts anführte. Auch "Drowned World (Substitute for Love)", "The Power of Goodbye" und "Nothing Really Matters" landeten in den britischen Top-10, aber das ist nur logisch, wenn man bedenkt, wie sehr die Briten auf elektronische Musik abfahren.

The album was recorded over eight months in 1997 at the singer's home in Los Angeles, California, and its music contains elements of electronica, techno, trip hop and new age.
