It is one of four albums on which Davis and Gil Evans collaborated with a small orchestra of horns and percussion. "Sketches Of Spain" is in the spirit of Spanish melodies - Joaquín Rodrigo's "El Concierto de Arajuez" and Manuel de Falla's "El Amor Brujo" - that fascinated Davis so much that he had to tap into them, while Evans paints a musical picture of a country he had never been to. Davis himself says, "It's music, and I like it."
