With equal passion, Davis contributed to bebop, cool and modal jazz, and later to the development of hardbop and the fusion of jazz and rock & roll. The sound of his trumpet - fully recognizable through the use of Harmon's mute - gave him a personal and intimate feel, a soft and melodic sound.
