Red Hot Chili Peppers : By The Way is the eighth studio album by American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers , released on July 9, 2002. The album was produced by Rick Rubin and featured contributions from George Clinton, John Frusciante and Flea. The album By The Way reached number two on the US Billboard 200 chart and was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The album spawned four singles, "By the Way", "The Zephyr Song", "Can't Stop" and "Dosed". The album marked a change in the band's sound, as it contained more experimental and psychedelic elements than their previous material. Frusciante, who rejoined the band after a five-year hiatus, was instrumental in the album's development, writing and recording most of the guitar tracks. Clinton handled additional production and vocals on the song "Pea". The album By The Way received positive reviews from music critics. On Metacritic, which assigns a standard rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 79, which means "generally favorable rating".
