Once every few anniversaries, an absolutely exceptional album appears in the music world - an album whose timing, quality and atmosphere are simply perfect for the times. "Urban Hymns" by The Verve was such an album. It was first released in 1997 and has since become a classic, including the epochal worldwide hit "Bitter Sweet Symphony", "The Drugs Don't Work" and "Lucky Man". To mark the 20th anniversary, a remastered version is being released with lots of bonus material - all the B-sides belonging to the album, as well as three hours of really powerful, previously unreleased live material, including a complete performance to 35,000 fans in his hometown of Wigan in May 1998 (on CD and DVD). As with the Super Deluxe Reissue of "A Storm In Heaven" and 2016's "A Northern Soul," remastering and mixing was handled by Chris Potter, co-producer of "Urban Hymns," and Metropolis' Tony Cousins.

The Verve Urban Hymns is an expansive and ambitious album that touches on a variety of genres, from rock to electronica to gospel. The album is at its best when the band experiments the most, such as on the trip-hop "Bitter Sweet Symphony" and the atmospheric "The Drugs Don't Work." At its worst, the album can be too indulgent, as in the overlong "Lucky Man." Overall, however, "Urban Hymns" is an impressive effort from a band at the peak of their powers.
