Several songs on the album were written by singer and guitarist Robert Smith and bassist Simon Gallup, while other songs were written by keyboardist Lol Tolhurst and drummer Boris Williams. The album was produced by Dave Allen and The Cure . The album artwork was designed by Smith. The Head on the Door was the band's first album to enter the UK Albums Chart, where it reached number seven. The album also reached the top ten in several other countries, including Ireland, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
