Many critics call this February 1963 concert Dave Brubeck's best live concert. But who can guess? Other than Brubeck himself, no one has seen or heard all 12,000 concerts, which he modestly estimates. A dozen of the titles had been released on studio LPs earlier, but the records certainly weren't yet known to all listeners. In the brief transitions between each title, Brubeck does a brief advert for the LP in question, but in such a whimsical way that you can't be mad at him. Between "St. Louis Blues" and "Take Five," the concert program shifts, and the solos are thankfully split between everyone, so Paul Desmond and Joe Morello, whose form on this night can only be called "captivatingly good," garner legitimate applause from the audience and us. "Castilian Drums" shows Morello's ingenuity and great sense of rhythm; Paul Desmond's solos ("Southern Scene" is a fine example!) are short but meaningful, melodically beautiful, lyrical and instantly recognisable in their own right. We fans are fortunate to hear these twelve tracks as superb live improvisations, played at the legendary Carnegie Hall, now back on vinyl after 60 years.
