Vienna Philharmonic keeps the tradition alive The New Year's Concert 2021 was a New Year's concert like no other. Due to the current protective measures against the Crown, it could only be played in the golden hall of the Vienna Musikverein without an audience. The Vienna Philharmonic and Riccardo Muti were alone with the 14 ORF cameras. The television broadcast of this traditional concert was watched worldwide by more than 50 million viewers in more than 90 countries. We were eagerly anticipating how the concert would look without the applause, without the traditional interruption of the second encore, which is introduced by clapping, and without the clapping during the Radetzky March. Riccardo Muti is a proven fixture at the New Year's Concert. 2021 was his sixth time participating in this special event. This makes Muti the busiest conductor of a New Year's concert since Lorin Maazel. For him, too, numerous Crown-related constraints have applied in the past year. His call to the Italian government to reconsider the closure of theatres and concert halls as a measure against the corona pandemic, published in October 2020, was met with much media interest. Musical and theatrical performances are by no means "useless"; society needs spiritual nourishment. The Vienna Philharmonic's summer night concert had to be postponed from May to September due to the pandemic and was held with almost no audience. In August at the Salzburg Festival and in November on a tour of Japan, the orchestra proved that with due effort it is possible to give concerts despite Covid-19. Already in May they volunteered to perform an aerosol excretion test under medical supervision. From the strings to the flute, this revealed various forms of airborne particle dispersion. However, the test showed a low risk of infection spread by air inhaled by the musicians. At the start of the new year, the Vienna Philharmonic once again presented a joyful, lively and contemplative programme of symphonic waltzes, polkas and marches by the Strauss dynasty and their contemporaries. Seven pieces were premiered at the New Year's concert in 2021. Right at the beginning, the march "Fatinitza" by Franz von Suppé was performed. This was followed by the waltz "Schallwellen" by Johann Strauss (Son). The waltzes "Grubenlichter" by Carl Zeller and "Bad'ner Mad'ln" by Karl Komzak (Son) were also performed for the first time. The gallop "In Saus und Braus" by Karl Millöcker and "Venezianer-Galopp" by Johann Strauss (father) brought a revival. The elegant "Margherita Polka" by Josef Strauss closed this year's novelties. In 2021, the 100th anniversary of the annexation of Burgenland to the Republic of Austria will be celebrated. At intermission, the film paid special tribute to the province's anniversary. Another celebrant this time is Riccardo Muti himself: 50 years ago Herbert von Karajan first engaged him as conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival. In his speech, Riccardo Muti described the past year as an "annus horribilis". People all over the world, and especially in Vienna, are hoping for a better year in 2021.
