El Combo Xingú

El Combo Xingú

Chilean rock-funk band from the late 60s consisting on: - Sergio Arellano: piano, organ, director - Raúl: percussion - Nelson Gamboa: contrabass - Patricio Lobos: guitar - Manuel Muñoz: trumpet - Esteban Moya: tenor saxophone - Fernando Fiori: vocals - Luis Ortiz: drums (from Los Angeles Negros) They released just two albums: "Combo Xingú" (1971) and "Xingú" (1972). Combo Xingú was a group of studio musicians active during the early '70s and made up of students who graduated from the National Conservatory of Music. Commanded by the orchestral director Sergio Arellano, the lineup included former members of the Beat Combo tropical orchestra, and with it the group shaped a unique repertoire between the roar of the New Chilean Song repertoire and the popular and orchestral formation of its members. On their first LP, Combo Xingú (1971), released by the Dicap label, the combo performs particular versions of contemporaries such as "Los momentos" by Los Blops, "El hombre actual" and "La brujita" by Payo Grondona, or "They will not move us", popularized by Tiemponuevo. Among his own songs there are "Joven otra vez", by Arellano himself, who at that time also served as musical director of the TV channel of the University of Chile. On the second album, titled Xingú! (1972) and published by the IRT label, Arellano presents another original song, "493 west", recorded together with instrumental arrangements for international hits such as "Bridge over troubled waters", by Simon & Garfunkel, and "Everbody's everything", by the rocker Latino Santana. In addition to Sergio Arellano on piano and organ, the group was made up of Raúl (percussion), Nelson Gamboa (bass), Patricio Lobos (guitar), Manuel Muñoz (trumpet) and Esteban Moya (tenor sax). The singer Fernando Fiori and Luis Ortiz, drummer from Los Ángeles Negros, also participate in the second LP. Combo Xingu dissolved in 1973.
