Johnny Cash: Travelin' Thru (The Bootleg Series Vol. 15 1967–1969) Die Version auf Vinyl 3LP in Standard- Auflage. Diese besondere Auflage wurde veröffentlicht in Europa im Verlag Columbia In Zusammenarbeit mit Legacy und Sony Music am 1. November 2019.
This new chapter in this highly acclaimed series presents 47 previously unreleased recordings from Dylan's 1967-1969 Nashville recording sessions, including outtakes from the John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline and Self Portrait albums, as well as recordings from Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash's 1969 studio session. The fifteenth installment of the Bootleg series is titled "Bob Dylan (featuring Johnny Cash) - Travelin' Thru, 1967 - 1969" and is released as a 3CD and 3LP set. CD 1 "Travelin' Thru, 1967 - 1969: The Bootleg Series Vol. 15" contains alternate takes of songs from the "John Wesley Harding" (Nashville sessions on October 17 and November 6, 1967) and "Nashville Skyline" (sessions on February 13 and 14, 1969) albums and features the song "Western Road", a previously completely unknown track from the recording sessions for this album. CDs 2 and 3 of the set focus on Dylan's collaboration with Johnny Cash and feature legendary recordings of the two icons at Columbia Studio A in Nashville. In addition, these discs also include recordings of Dylan and Johnny Cash made at the Ryman Auditorium on the occasion of ABC's "The Johnny Cash Show" on May 1, 1969, as well as Dylan's recordings with bluegrass banjo legend Earl Scruggs for the PBS television special "Earl Scruggs: His Family And Friends". 1967 marked a groundbreaking and surprising musical transformation for Dylan. While pop music was increasingly moving in a surreal and psychedelic direction after Dylan's 1965/66 trilogy "Bringing It All Back Home"/"Highway 61 Revisited"/"Blonde On Blonde", Bob Dylan withdrew from the public eye for a time after a motorcycle accident in July 1966. He recorded the song "Blonde On Blonde" in Nashville in February 1966, but then with a full band. However, when the next album, "John Wesley Harding", began recording in the fall of 1967, Dylan opted for a simple, spare trio (Dylan - guitar, vocals, harmonica; Charlie McCoy - bass; Kenneth Buttrey - drums). Dylan said of that time: "At the time, I didn't know how other people recorded their albums, and frankly, it wasn't even my ambition (...). In my opinion, these big productions weren't even necessary." In February 1969, Bob Dylan returned to Columbia Studio A to record his album "Nashville Skyline". "Bob asked me if I'd like to guest on the album," Johnny Cash said in a later interview, "so I went into the studio, the engineers set up the tape machines, and we did about two hours of recording." There were two Dylan and Cash recordings at Columbia Studio A: on February 17 and 18, 1969, with a band featuring rock 'n' roll pioneer and guitarist Carl Perkins, for six songs, including his own "Matchbox." One of the most intriguing discoveries on "Travelin' Thru" is definitely the Dylan/Cash duet from the medley "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright/Understand Your Man," where two unique singer-songwriters pay tribute to each other with their songs. The all-day Dylan/Cash reunion on February 18, 1969, featured a number of cover versions and two medleys of Jimmie Rodgers songs, as well as the first known version of "Wanted Man," which is also the only version of the song Dylan ever sang. A week after these recordings, "Wanted Man" became the first song of the famous San Quentin concert. In the first episode of the television show "The Johnny Cash Show" in June 1969, host Johnny Cash guest-hosted with his friend Bob Dylan. In the days before and after the taping of "The Johnny Cash Show", Dylan was already working on his next album, which would be released a year later as the double album "Self Portrait". During the recording of "Self Portrait" on May 3, guitarist Fred Carter joined Dylan's regular Nashville band. Two songs, "Folsom Prison Blues" and "Ring Of Fire", both recorded that day, will be heard for the first time on "Travelin' Thru". Although Dylan's 1969 album "Nashville Skyline" contains only one duet with Johnny Cash ("Girl From The North Country"), Johnny Cash wrote the accompanying liner notes and even won a Grammy for them.
