Loin des Hommes won three Golden Lions at the Venice Film Festival. The film, starring Viggo Mortensen and Reda Kateb among others, is an adaptation of a short story by Albert Camus. A compelling story of loyalty and colonialist violence during the Algerian War of Independence. Featuring hypnotic drones, pointillist piano interludes, mournful strings and nerve-wracking electronics, this soundtrack is one of the most experimental yet soulful works the duo has released to date. The arrangements sound poignant, intimate and stunningly generous at the same time. Nick Cave and Warren Ellis are known for their film and theatre soundtracks that are elegantly minimalist, hauntingly beautiful and instantly recognisable as a work from their pens. These bleakly orchestrated soundscapes, full of light and shadow and bleak longing, breathe an aching humanity into abandoned ghost towns, arid desert landscapes and post-apocalyptic war zones. Most of the tracks are based on interweaving piano and violin melodies, which the duo complement with careful insertions of guitar, flute, mandolin, chimes, percussion and other elements. Vocals are rarely found. However, the music is always lyrical even without the use of vocals. Although Cave and Ellis had been collaborating with The Bad Seeds and other projects since 1995, their careers as film music composers did not begin until a decade later, when they first became actively involved in the film The Proposition by Australian John Hillcoat, whom they already knew from various other collaborations.
